1) Culblean Hill Walk from Raebush
Distance 5 miles/8 km Time 3-4 hours. Grade difficult (330m ascent).
A hill walk which gives beautiful views of the surrounding hills, countryside
and the village of Tarland, reached by way of a steep climb through
forest and moorland. This route takes you into open high ground where
navigation skills may be needed in poor weather, as well as suitable
clothing and equipment.
- From the A93 turn along the B9119 signposted to Tarland or Strathdon.
Pass the Burn O Vat Centre, a mile further on turn left, signposted
Raebush, a further mile along this road and there is off road parking.
- Proceed
up the track towards Redburn, passing a small lochan on your left
and then the keeper’s house, please respect privacy.
Progress through some mixed woodland and soon the open moor
is in front. Take time to look back at the skyline of the Howe of
Cromar. The Howe, with its many land uses; forestry, farming
and recreation, provides you with a rich mosaic landscape of
varying texture, shape and colours.
- Soon a junction will appear
turn left and proceed up the track. You will come to a col and flat
ground requiring attention should it be poor visibility. The top
of Culblean (499m) and the trig point (477m) offer good views down
to Lochs Davan and Kinord.
- Your position now gives you a window into
history as the view below is the site of the Battle of Culblean,
a famous Scots victory on St. Andrews Day 30th November 1335, one of
the significant battles of the Second Wars of Independence.
- Return
to car by retracing steps.
