Low level walks around Aboyne

The attractive town of Aboyne, famous for its highland games which take place every year on its magnificent green in the centre, is situated mid-way between Aberdeen and Braemar on Royal Deeside, beside the River Dee. 1) River Dee Circular Walk – Upstream

Distance 4 miles/6 km. Time 1 ½ hours. Grade easy.
A pretty riverside walk giving excellent views over the river and west along the Dee valley.

  1. Starting from the village centre take the Charleston Road to the Boat Inn. Descend the steps and go right along the riverside path, passing underneath the Dee Bridge. Continue for about 1 km before turning right at the way marker through the woods to the Rhu-na-Haven Road.
  2. For the shorter route continue straight ahead, cross the Bridge View Road and along Huntly Road back to the centre of the village.
  3. Alternatively, for the main route, turn left as far as the way marker to the right into the woods just before the main A93 road. The path goes through the Lady Wood to the Community Centre where you turn right along Bridge View Road and then left before the bridge to return to the Boat and hence the village centre.

2) River Dee Circular Walk – Downstream

Distance 2 ½ miles/4km. Time 1 hour. Grade easy for most of the way, but involves a short section of scrambling to get past an eroded bank beside the river. This attractive route follows the riverbank down river for almost 2km, passing many favourite salmon pools on the way.

  1. On leaving the riverside you can either return to the village directly or cross the bridge over Tarland Burn into the Bell Wood, a newly acquired Community Woodland.
  2. As for the Red route, reach the Boat Inn, descend to the riverbank and turn left. Keep to the riverside path and cross stiles, looking out for fishermen and for any beasts that might be drinking down by the river edge. Cross the deep ditch and scramble past the eroded bank and continue as far as the water treatment works.
  3. Turn left as marked and walk between the fences to the Low Road, before returning back along the Low Road to the village.
